Rob Costa is a hotelier and Chartered Accountant based in London and Cape Town and holds qualifications from Cape Peninsula University, University of South Africa and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants in the United Kingdom.
While living in the UK for a decade, Costa drew on his passion for the environment and our role in it, to design and patent waste management systems to be implemented by councils in an effort to encourage and reward recycling.
On his return to South Africa, Costa set about opening a sustainable boutique hotel, by investing in various systems, including LED lighting, wind turbines, solar panels, photovoltaic panels, timing circuits, low flow faucets, and A-rated energy efficient equipment. These measures resulted in an 82% energy consumption reduction, and a 55% carbon footprint decrease for his hotel. Additional focus on water and waste management, procurement, back office practices; and staff training, development, capacity building, appraisals and reward resulted in a best practice sustainable business.
In 2013 Costa founded Green Tourism Active (www.gt-active.org), a non-profit company offering global sustainability assessments and certifications for hotels, guest houses, lodges, restaurants and tour operators who trade in an ethical, environmentally friendly and sustainable way. Costa’s background in accounting allows him to help tourism operators realise the financial advantages of investing in sustainable business practices. Costa is also a qualified auditor of Green Globe International (a global leader in sustainability).
Outside of work Costa is an accomplished artist, national springboard and highboard diving champion, and has represented South Africa and the UK at various international sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games, World Games and World Masters Games where he won the world titles in 1998, 2000, 2004 and 2006.
